BYPL DSM initiatives

Demand Side Management (DSM) entails actions that influence the quantity or patterns of use of energy consumed by end users, such as actions targeting reduction of peak demand during periods when energy- supply systems are constrained. Peak demand management does not necessarily decrease total energy consumption but aims at altering the end-use of electricity. DSM is the implementation of those measures that help us to use electricity more efficiently and in doing so reduce the utility costs.

Benefits of DSM activities include:-

  • Lower overall cost of electricity to the consumers by economical and efficient use of resources.
  • To complement supply side strategies to help to meet electric service demands by assisting utilities (generation, transmission and distribution) to avoid or delay costly additions.
  • Reducing difference between power demand during peak periods and off peak period.

In line with what is envisioned in the DERC regulations, BYPL has been consistently organizing & carrying out activities that shall help in creating awareness for energy conservation as well as DSM programs. BYPL has signed an agreement with EESL (Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) is a joint venture of PSUs to implement UJALA programme in our License area.

UJALA scheme was launched by the Government of India. Unnat Jeevan by Affordable LEDs & Appliances for All (UJALA) is the wordplay for UJALA. Earlier, this scheme was announced as “Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP)”. The Scheme was launched as part of Union Government’s efforts to spread the message of energy efficiency in the country so the main objective of this scheme is to reduce the energy consumption with the help of energy efficient bulbs like LEDs. I.e. by replacing the inefficient bulbs like incandescent bulbs, tube lights, CFL bulbs and other less efficient bulbs with the energy efficient bulbs like LEDs, energy can be saved to a large extent. Other objective is to enhance awareness on using efficient equipment which reduce electricity bills and help preserve environment.

Every domestic household having a metered connection from their respective BYPL is eligible to get the LED bulbs/Tube light/Energy efficient Fan under the UJALA Scheme. The consumer can purchase the LED/Tube light/Energy efficient Fan  on upfront payment by paying the full amount. The Energy efficient appliances are available at the distribution Kiosks in 14 divisions offices of BYPL.

UJALA appliances can be purchased at Rs 70 per LED bulb, Rs 220 per LED tubelight and Rs 1200 per Fan. The price of appliances consist of component such as price of bulb, distribution, awareness cost, which is discovered through competitive bidding, Annual Maintenance Cost (AMC), cost of capital and administrative costs.

If the LED/Tube light  stops working due to a technical defects, EESL provides free-of-cost replacements for a period of three years. All replacements are done through designated replacement / BYPL division offices distribution Kiosks .

Under the programme BYPL has made the progress so far as outlined below

  • 19.5 lakh of LED lights/ 27,600  Tube light /2900 nos. of energy efficient fans were sold by BYPL since inception.
  •  Reduction in CO2 Emissions (tons) 1,33,520(cumulative).

The scheme is applicable as per the EESl agreement. In case of any problem the consumer can contact the Customer care officer of the respective division office
