Press Release

Copper Moulding Factory owner fined Rs 1.2 crore for stealing electricity;

14-day jail to another

Luck seems to be running out for power thieves. As it happened in two cases recently. In the first case, a copper ‘moulding’ factory was found illegally drawing a whopping 125 KW of electricity for industrial purposes in West Delhi. A penalty of over Rs 1.2 crore has been levied on the owners. In another case, Musahid Hussain, owner of a mid-sized industrial unit was sent to Tihar Jail for stealing around 17 KW of electricity in East Delhi.

Copper Moulding Factory caught stealing 125 KW in Molarbund

During an inspection, a BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) Enforcement team caught a mid-sized Copper ‘moulding’ factory stealing a whopping 125 KW of electricity by hooking from a nearby BSES LV Mains. Though the factory had a three-phase meter with a sanctioned load of 31 KW, it was found by-passed. According to the DERC guidelines, a penalty of Rs 1.2 crore has been imposed on the accused – Mohd Rehman, Mehrajuddin and Nasim – running the factory in West Delhi’s Molarband area. If the accused do not pay the fine within a stipulated timeframe, a FIR will be filed and a case lodged in the Special Court.

The entire Molarband area is dotted small and mid-sized with copper moulding and steel cutting factories.

Special Court sends factory owner sent to Tihar

In another case, M Hussain, a factory owner has been sent to Tihar Jail for 14days for stealing electricity. In November 2007, a BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) Enforcement team, accompanied by CISF personnel and the local Police had raided an industrial unit. The unit had a mid-sized garment unit situated on one floor and an industrial steam press situated on the other – both running on stolen electricity.

The industrial unit situated at Gali No 3, Welcome, Seelampur, was found to be illegally drawing nearly 17 KW of electricity from a nearby BSES LV Mains. According to the DERC guidelines, he had been levied a penalty of Rs 10.56 lakh. When the accused did not pay the penalty amount, the case was filed in the Patparganj situated Special Court.

According to a BSES spokesperson, “a sustained campaign against power theft by BSES over the years, along with infusion of high-end distribution technology, has seen AT & C losses coming down from a high of 63% to about 20% (BRPL 19%, BYPL 23.1%)”

BRPL and BYPL, Delhi’s premier power distribution companies are committed to ensuring quality and reliable electricity supply to all their consumers.
