The Special Court of Electricity, Karkardooma, has remanded two residents of East Delhi’s Patparganj, Mukesh and Suresh, to Tihar Jail for stealing electricity. Both are habitual power thieves. This was the third time the duo was caught stealing electricity. Ignoring their pleas proclaiming their innocence, the Additional Civil Judge remanded them to Tihar Jail.
On 27 September 2011, the duo was apprehended stealing electricity for the third time by BSES Yamuna Power Limited’s (BYPL) enforcement team. Being habitual offenders, an immediate FIR was registered against them and acting promptly, the Delhi Police arrested them and produced them before the Special Court at Kakardooma. The Special Court remanded them to a 14 day Judicial Custody to Tihar.
The duo were caught indulging in direct theft of 6 KW by hooking from the nearby BSES LV Mains. Earlier they were caught stealing electricity on 15 May 2010 and then again on 2 June 2010, when they were caught stealing 15 KW’s.
Meanwhile, BYPL’s enforcement team swooped down on power theft power at 20 places in East Delhi’s Ghazipur area and unearthed power theft of around 200 KW. According to the provisions of the Indian Electricity Act 2003, a cumulative penalty of around Rs 40 lakh was imposed on the accused. If the penalty is not paid within a stipulated timeframe, FIR’s will be registered against them.
“BSES enforcement teams are using modern analytic tools to accurately pin point high theft prone areas,“ said a BYPL official
According to a BYPL spokesperson, “Over the years, by getting a grip on power theft, BYPL has reduced its AT& C Losses from a high of 63. 16% to 19.8% - an annual reduction of around 5%. This is substantially more than the national average of around 1%.
