                                                            Press Release

How to Keep Ones Electricity Bills in Check

•           Global Warming cause of increasing temperatures – effects visible in India too

•           In June, Delhi became the 2nd highest power guzzling state in North India

•           Experts analyse  reasons for “increased” bills this summer

•           Reasons for “increased” electricity bills include – (i) Removal of 10% subsidy; (ii) Excessive and long use of ACs, (iii)Use of ACs at 18 Degrees, vis-ΰ-vis 25 last year

•           Simple power saving tips can bring about a considerable reduction in electricity bills

Global Warming, the global bugbear that is giving sleepless nights to Scientists and Governments, the world over, is increasingly making its presence felt in India too. Freak and unpredictable weather conditions like increase in temperatures, excessive rains in some parts, while droughts in others etc – all synonymous with Global Warming – are very much evident in India since the last few months.

The unprecedented heat wave sweeping across North India this summer saw Delhi becoming the 2nd highest power (4408 MW in July) guzzling state in North India. Delhi discoms supplied almost 20% more electricity in their areas in June, than the corresponding period last year.

A few of Delhi’s power consumers, recently, raised the issue of receiving “increased” electricity bills in the last couple of months. In the wake of these claims, experts came up with the following reasons:

•           The 10 percent subsidy technically came to an end on May 31st. All bills from billing date of June 1 onwards are higher to that extent.

•           Excessive use of AC’s and Refrigerators in the wake of the unprecedented heat wave. So much was the heat that the built in thermostats, hardly triggered

•           Last summers, people who were accustomed to use their AC’s at 25 Degree, started using their AC at 18 Degrees

•           Duration of AC usage increased from about 4 hours/day last year to about 12 this year

But here are a carefully researched power saving tips, which can help you save a considerable amount of money

Lighting System

•           Turn off lights and fans when not in use.

•           As far as possible use task lighting which focuses light where it is needed.

•           Clean tube lights and bulbs regularly as dirty ones can waste upto 50% of the light through absorption.

•           Replace the ordinary lamps with energy efficient CFLs which use 80% less energy. By switching to CFLs, you can save between Rs 321-Rs 525 per CFL/Year

Switch Off

•           Avoid keeping electronic appliances TV, AC, DVD Player, and Music System in the Stand-By mode. When not in use, always switch them off from the main switch. Gadgets switched-ff from the remote control, continue to consume electricity. A survey has shown that Delhi looses about 175 MW due to gadgets in the stand-by mode.

Room ACs

•           You can reduce energy use by as much as 40% by shading the windows and the walls with plans

•           Set the AC thermostat at 25 degree C to provide the most comfort at the least cost.

•           Keep the doors of the air-conditioned room closed as far as possible.

•           Clean the Ac filter every month.

•           Set a higher cut-off temperature for your air-conditioner when not required.

Refrigerator

•           Make sure the refrigerator is placed away from any heat source including direct sunlight.

•           Allow enough space around the refrigerator for continuous airflow. If the heat cannot escape, the cooling system will have to work harder and use more energy.

•           Defrost the freezer compartment regularly for a manual defrost refrigerator.

•           Do not keep your refrigerator door open for too long.

•           Periodically check the check the condition of the door gasket.

Inverter/Generator/Geysers

•           Install a Total Isolation Relay for invertors/generators/geysers to prevent your electricity meter from running during a power cut.

•           Install Thermostat fitted geysers.

•           Get your geyser serviced every year.

Microwaves

•           One can save 50% on cooking energy costs by using a microwave oven instead of a regular oven.

•           Place larger and thicker items towards the outside edge as microwaves cook from the outer to the center of the dish.

Computers

•           Turn off the computer when not in use.

•           The monitor uses more than half of the energy consumed. Turn it off even if you have to

leave the computer on.

•           Screen savers do not save energy. Start ups and shutdowns do not use any extra energy and nor do they harm the components, so hutting down computers when not in use actually reduces system wear and tear and also saves energy.
