  • Project will streamline the distribution system and significantly reduce the outages on account of trippings and system overload due to power theft
  • Initiative will also lead to a cumulative increase of 1.85 million units of billed energy in the five areas
  • In the last few months, BSES has booked 740 cases, booked electricity theft load of 4100 KW (4 MW) in the five Project Parivartan areas

In a bid to crackdown on power theft and improve the quality of electricity supply, BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) has launched Project Parivartan, an ambitious project, aimed at reducing AT & C losses, between 16% and 75% in three months.

The ambitious pilot project aims to significantly reduce power theft in high five power theft areas – where the quantum of power theft ranges between 52% to 100%. Incidentally, all the areas are in the vicinity of up market South Delhi neighbourhoods. Depending on the success, it will be replicated in other power theft areas of BRPL and BYPL.

BRPL has initiated several steps to streamline its distribution system. Implementation of Project Parivartan in Madanpur Khadar, Begumpur, Munirka Village, Gautam Nagar and Madandir - at a cumulative investment of over Rs 8 crore – will not only greatly help in reducing power theft from the existing high levels but also get thousand’s of additional customers in the billing net”, said Ajay Dhagat CEO BRPL, adding “Additionally, it will also streamline the overhead distribution network by giving it an aesthetic look.

BSES is following a four pronged action plan in these areas:

  • Replacement of existing uninsulated low tension mains and conductors with insulated Aerial Bunched cables and LT AB Conductors
  • Intensified Enforcement Raids in the area
  • Replacement of existing mechanical meters with electronic meters
  • Acquisition of new customers in the billing net

Significant reduction in AT & C losses, after the implementation of the project, will see a cumulative increase of 1.85 million units of billed energy across the five areas. This will be largely possible as insulated Aerial Bunch Cables and LT AB Conductors will make it next to impossible for the unscrupulous elements to steal power by hooking on to the un-insulated BSES low tension wires and conductors.

Because of the high incidence of power theft, the five Project Parivartan areas have frequent and sometimes long incidence of outages on account of trippings and system overload – causing inconvenience to the honest customers in these and surrounding areas. Successful implementation of the project will greatly reduce these outages, by getting thousands of additional customers in the billing net.

“BSES appeals to the residents of Madanpur Khadar, Begumpur, Munirka Village, Gautam Nagar and Madandir, to take legal BSES connections, for which camps are being organised in the area” said a BSES official.

Power theft in Project Parivartan areas

In the last few months, BSES Enforcement teams have booked over 740 cases of power theft in Project Parivartan areas, booking of over 4100 KW of electricity theft load and slapping penalties of over Rs 4.8 crore.
