BRPL-IIT Kanpur ink path-breaking agreement to improve power delivery for consumers
Focus will be to further optimise and improve power delivery to consumers
Facilitate cutting edge research in the realm of power distribution
IIT Kanpur to train and equip BRPL engineers with next-generation knowledge and tools
Help BRPL in resolving technical issues faster and more efficiently
BRPL to have sole and exclusive rights to use of project studies
In a far-reaching development, BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This is likely to lead to path-breaking possibilities. Among other things, the primary focus of the partnership will be to further optimize and improve the quality of power delivery to the consumers leveraging next-generation research and technology. In addition, IIT-Kanpur will also train and equip BRPL engineers with next-generation knowledge and tools. The agreement signed in Kanpur, will be for a period of three years initially.
Part of the Industry-Institution Collaboration initiative, the MoU will not only facilitate cutting-edge research in the realm of power distribution, but will also enable BRPL to get expert help in resolving complex technical issues faster and more efficiently. It will also help the company in capability building. This is perhaps for the first time; an agreement with such a wide-scope has been signed between a distribution utility and a premier engineering institute in the country.
Some of the major areas of joint-research and scope of the agreement include:
Adaptation of new cutting-edge technologies
Evaluation of technical losses at various existing voltage levels and suggestions for improvement.
System studies and Network planning
Reactive Power Optimization
Harmonic estimation and control
Training and Development of BRPL engineers
“The tie-up with IIT Kanpur is yet another testimonial to BSES’ commitment to be at the forefront of cutting-edge technology. The ultimate beneficiaries of this association will be the consumer. This collaboration will draw and leverage from each other’s strengths and expertise. While BRPL has the domain knowledge, IIT Kanpur has the R & D expertise”, said Mr Gopal Saxena, CEO, BRPL.
“This pioneering initiative between BRPL and IIT Kanpur will foster research that will not only benefit the BSES consumers, but the entire distribution sector as a whole. This association has the potential to overhaul the very method power distribution business is carried-out in the country”, added Mr Saxena.
Going forward, this collaboration is likely to generate a lot of proprietary ideas and research material. BRPL will also have the sole and exclusive rights to use the results of project studies undertaken by this association and IIT-Kanpur will use them for teaching purposes.
To achieve the desired objectives of the association, both BRPL and IIT-Kanpur will appoint one Principal Project Investigator each, to coordinate the respective scope of work. Assisting them will be project-specific teams. The cost of the projects will be borne by BRPL.
According to a BRPL spokesperson, “Another highlight of this association is that faculty members from IIT Kanpur will guide and assist BRPL in solving its routine technical issues relating to system studies and technology up-gradation. This will lead to faster resolution of complex issues”
BRPL and BYPL, Delhi’s premier power distribution companies are committed to ensuring quality and reliable electricity supply to all their consumers.
