BSES’ SCADA and Ace-team of 700 officials

at CWG venues ensured un-interrupted power supply

- including BRPL’ 100 MW of green’ wind power from Tamil Nadu especially for CWG venues

The recently concluded XIX Commonwealth Games were a ‘glittering’ success and received accolades word-wide. BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) played their role as the host discoms with aplomb. Un-interrupted power supply was crucial to the success to the Commonwealth Games. BSES discoms lived-up to the challenge of powering India’s largest ever sporting extravaganza without a single power-related incident.

From timely completion of work to strengthen and augment the distribution network at the Games venues to supplying uninterrupted power supply – both in the city and the Games venues - nothing was found wanting. BSES also ensured that 100% of the streetlights received proper and uninterrupted electricity. BSES discoms also spruced-up their distribution network on-roads leading-upto the Games venues, including shifting of over-head cables under-ground in Karol Bagh and Paharganj areas. Moreover, BSES converted over-head cables to underground at around 350 road-crossings / locations in South, West, Central and East Delhi. BSES discoms catered to over 130 MW (BRPL 100 MW, BYPL 30 MW) of dedicated load to the Games venues.

To over-come any unforeseen power-related contingency, BSES discoms had deployed crack-teams of over 700 empowered officials round-the-clock at the 12 Games venues. Additionally, a team of senior-officials (Assistant Vice President level) was deployed round-the-clock at the Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) Centre – to monitor the supply - to the Games venues.

BSES’ state-of-the-art SCADA proved very crucial for the un-interrupted power supply during the Games. It remote controlled operations of all the 121* Grid Stations in BSES’ licensed area, including those catering to the Games venues and Commonwealth Games village. SCADA remotely monitored the health of BSES’ distribution system in real time so as to ensure un-interrupted supply at all venues”, said Mr Gopal Saxena, CEO, BRPL.

To ensure un-interrupted power during the Commonwealth Games, BSES discoms had arranged for 350 MW of additional power during the period of the Commonwealth Games. This included, 100 MW of round-the-clock ‘green’ wind power arranged by BRPL through banking-arrangements from Tamil Nadu. This power was especially arranged for the CWG venues.

According to Mr Ramesh Narayanan, CEO, BYPL, “Meticulous planning, use of high-end technology and the timely completion of Games related-activities, including the over Rs 80 crore program to strengthen and augment the distribution network at the CWG venues and other CWG related activities, by BSES discoms, ensured that there was not a single power-related incident during the Games”

Some additional measures that had been taken by BSES to ensure un-interrupted power-supply during the Games, included:

BRPL and BYPL, Delhi’s premier power distribution companies are committed to ensuring quality and reliable electricity supply to all their consumers.
