BYPL helps Karol Bagh and Paharganj ‘SPORT’ new look for CWG

.shifts electricity cables underground



Delhi is witnessing a large influx of foreigners during the Commonwealth Games. A large number of them are also expected to visit Karol Bagh and Paharganj. In view of the same, BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) has shifted its electricity cables underground in the Karol Bagh and Paharganj areas. The jungle of overhead cables – till now ugly eyesores – has been shifted underground and state-of-the-art compact packaged sub-stations installed.


A total of Rs 50 crore has been spent to shift the untidy over head and hanging wires underground in the congested by-lanes. This has not only beautified the area but also made it much easier to locate and fix electricity faults. This will also help reducing power theft.


Despite the difficulties and challenges in shifting cables underground on account of a prolonged and unprecedented monsoons this year, and working in the narrow and congested by-lanes, BYPL team was able to complete the work on time”, said Mr Ramesh Narayanan, CEO, BYPL,


The shifting of the cables underground in this historic area will add a new dimension to the beauty to the area. The area is now sporting a new look. The company’s ultimate wish is to shift all the cables underground in its licensed area”, added Mr Narayanan.


The prominent areas and crossings in Paharganj and Karol Bagh where electricity poles have been removed and wires shifted underground include Arya Samaj Road, Ajmal Khan Road, Saraswati Marg, Gurudwara Road, Dayal Chowk, Ravi Das Marg, Maharana Pratap Road, Pusa Road, Padam Singh Road, area around Siddharth Hotel among others.


The scope of the work includes shifting of over 200 Kms of cable and installation of 500 Feeder Pillars. Old sub-stations have also been replaced with 40 state-of-the-arts compact packaged sub-stations. These sub-stations looking like an enclosed box are also score very high on safety.








According to Mr Ramesh Narayanan, “Due to narrow and congested lanes and by-lanes, it was always a challenge to fix complaint any electricity related complaint in the area. With the new system in place, this will be things of the past. Removal of pillars and old-sub-stations from the area has also created lot of space. With the new system, it will now also be possible for BSES’ state-of-the-art SCADA and GIS Systems to promptly identify the cause and exact location of the fault”
