FIR lodged against power thieves; booked for over Rs 1.3 crore

BSES enforcement teams today booked two cases of massive daylight robbery: one involving direct theft of over 240 KW of power, worth approximately Rs. 1 crore, and the other involved over 90 KW. 

Stealing over 240 KW of power was an illegal plastic factory at WZ 14/15 Golden Park, Rampura, Punjabi Bagh. Owned by one Choudhary Ranjit Singh, this factory was illegally drawing power by hooking on to LV mains, using a combination of Teflon and aluminium wires. The factory had no electricity meter and was thus booked for around Rs 1 crore - based on its consumption pattern of 240 KW. BSES has filed FIR No. 929/2005 in this regard at the Punjabi Bagh police station.  

The other case involving theft of 90 KW was booked at Jawala Nagar, Shahdara, when the local BSES enforcement team spotted a direct supply line hooked on to an LV main. The direct supply line led to a plastic dana (pellets) factory. Taking support from Vivek Vihar police station the enforcement team raided the factory and found equipment having an assessed load of over 90 KW. BSES slapped a fine of Rs. 37 lakh on the owner of the factory, Narayan Gupta. In addition, a case of direct theft has also been registered against the factory owner.  

According to a BSES spokesman, "Power theft constitutes a significant proportion of BSES' AT&C losses. BSES will be enhancing the intensity & scope of its enforcement drive after Diwali. The Enforcement teams are currently preparing to undertake the massive anti-theft drive. "  

A dedicated helpline number 39999777 has been set up by BSES to help report cases of power theft. An average of 150 cases of theft are reported on this number everyday. Consumers can use this number to report cases of power theft that they may identify in their colonies/surroundings.”
