BSES discoms get ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certifications for commitment to

Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental concerns



BSES’ commitment to occupational health and safety of its stakeholders and continuous improvement in systems for reducing environmental impact of its actions has received international stamp of approval. BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) have been accredited with the coveted ISO 14001: 2004 and OHSAS 18001: 2007 certifications. The former deals with processes and aspects of the business, which impact the environment and the latter with health and safety of stakeholders, including employees.


According to Mr Gopal Saxena, CEO BRPL, “These two international certifications once again bear testimony to the conscious efforts of BSES towards the environment and the safety of all its stakeholders. Being a responsible corporate entity, BSES undertakes initiatives, keeping in mind the global best practices. It continues to strive to set new benchmarks, in standards of corporate performance, governance, and safety through the pursuit of operational excellence. These certifications will continue to influence and keep us conscious of our safety and environmental responsibilities”


According to Mr Ramesh Narayanan, CEO BYPL “Being committed to the environment, BSES is taking steps to ensure that the oil from around 12,000 of its transformers is disposed-off scientifically and according to statutory regulations. To reduce the impact on the environment BSES has undertaken a host of initiatives including converting around 200 operations and maintenance vehicle fleet to CNG, as well as promoting, global warming reducing "white roofs" at its premises.”


ISO 14001: 2004

Created by the ISO, 14001:2004 is a globally recognized ‘environmental management system’ standard that specifies processes for controlling and improving a company's environmental performance. An internationally recognized standard and based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, ISO 14001:2004 specifies the most important requirements to identify, control and monitor the environmental aspects of any organization, and also how to manage and improve the whole system.


This certification shows BSES’ commitment to the environment management through development of processes for reducing pollution of any form to a level as laid down in the 14001: 2004 Standard.


OHSAS 18001: 2007


This is an international standard on Occupational Health and Safety. The standard lays down importance on the aspect for ensuring commitment from the management on the issue of Heath and Safety of all the stake holders, by having well defined procedures in the working environment. It is about application of contemporary business management principles to control OHSAS risks.


In the run up to the Certifications, BSES analyzed the aspects of its various processes and their consequent impact. All non-conformities were removed and standard procedures documented for effective implementation and our commitment to continual improvement. The two accreditations were given to BSES on the basis of the final audit conducted by M/s Bureau Veritas, which confirmed that our processes and practices are in conformity to the two standards.

Going forward, BSES has made it a practice to continuously educate all stakeholders, including employees, on the aspects of safety and concern for the environment. To sensitise employees on the fire hazards, mock fire drills are being conducted at various BSES locations.


In the run up to the certifications, auditors surveyed several BRPL and BYPL offices, including Head Offices at Nehru Place, Karkardooma, spare parts stores at Rajghat, business and O&M offices at Nehru Place, Vasant Vihar, Shankar Road and Data Centre at Nizamuddin.
