BSES discoms win India Power Award 2010 for “Overall Utility Performance – Urban Areas”
Distinguished jury and a stringent selection criteria make India Power Awards the Gold standard in the Indian power sector
Nominees judged on (i) Performance (ii) Innovation (iii) Responsiveness and Impact (iv) Scalability and Sustainability
Chief BSES achievements considered included – (i) Technological advancements, (ii) Record AT& C loss reduction, (iii) Customer Care initiatives, (iv) CSR Initiatives, –(v) Savings to the Delhi Government
The spectacular turn-around brought about by BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) is increasingly being noticed and lauded. The latest laurel is the prestigious India Power Award 2010 for their significant achievements brought about in the last eight years.
Promoted by the Council of Power Utilities, these awards have a distinguished jury and a stringent and exhaustive evaluation criterion, making them the Gold standard in the India Power Sector. In a glittering ceremony at Delhi’s India Habitat Centre today, the award was presented to BRPL CEO Mr Gopal Saxena and BYPL CEO Mr Ramesh Narayanan by the legendary Dr V Krishnamurthy (Chairman, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council and former CMD of BHEL, Maruti Udyog Limited and SAIL).
The 3rd India Power Award was presented to BSES in the category “Overall Utility Performance – Urban Areas”. BSES won the award amidst stiff competition. Launched in 2008, these awards strive to promote and recognise excellence in the power sector. This is also the second successive time; BSES is winning the India Power Award. Last year, BYPL won the award for “Overall Loss Reduction in Urban Segment”.
While deciding the winners, the jury judged the nominees on four-broad parameters: (i) Performance (ii) Innovation (iii) Responsiveness and Impact and (iv) Scalability and Sustainability. On all these counts, BSES discoms came-out on top.
While deciding the award, the jury minutely scrutinised BSES’ achievements – across parameters and functions. Chief among them included (i) Technological advancements like Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Geographical Information System (GIS), SAP, Optical Downloading, Analytics for controlling power theft, (ii) Record AT& C loss reduction (averaging 4.1% annually as against national average of less than 1%) (iii) Customer Care initiatives like Door Step Service, Multiple Payment Options, SMS Services, (iv) CSR Initiatives like - electric vehicle charge ports - Bijli Gyan Abhiyan (targeting nearly 2000 schools), Promotion of CFLs (saving over 30 MW), Concept of Vishisht Sahayogis, among others, (v) Savings to the Delhi Government (Rs 14,625 crore)
Expressing his gratitude and happiness on the occasion, BRPL CEO, Mr Gopal Saxena said, “This award will further motivate us to perform even better and continue to deliver according to the expectations of our different stakeholders. BSES will continue to work with dedication and innovation keeping in mind total customer satisfaction. It has set new benchmarks in standards of corporate performance and governance, through the pursuit of operational excellence”.

A total of 37 awards were presented across 12 different categories. Other prominent utilities that received the awards today under various categories included Reliance Infrastructure, Infosys, IBM and Crompton Greaves Ltd.
The awards were selected by an
eminent jury consisting of stalwarts from the power sector. It
included Mr. H. L. Bajaj (Former Member, Technical, Appellate
Tribunal for Electricity), Mr. P. Abraham (Former Secretary, Ministry
of Power), Dr. C. R. Prasad, (Former CMD, GAIL & Chairman Everest
Power Pvt. Ltd)

Director, GVK Technical & Consultancy Services Private Limited),
Mr. V. Raghuraman (Former Principal, Adviser (Energy),

According to a BSES spokesperson, “BSES has invested around Rs 4500 crore in strengthening the distribution network in its operational area spanning nearly 950 kq kms in East, Central, South and West Delhi. Since July 2002, BSES has nearly doubled the distribution network in its area of operation, as compared to the network inherited and which took almost 60 years to build. As a result, Delhi was effortlessly able to meet the peak power demand of 4720 MW during the summers of 2010 – up from 2879 MW in 2002”.
