Institute of Engineers confers ‘National Safety Innovation Award 2010" on BYPL

• BYPL among handful of utilities who have bagged the award in the past

• Award given for reducing electricity related dangers and making the distribution network safer in East and Central Delhi

• Faced stiff competition from 50 companies including ONGC, NTPC, GAIL etc

• Implementation of next gen technologies GIS, SCADA, OMS and Smart Grid decided the award in BYPL’ favour

• Launched ‘Safety First’ campaign to promote safety among customers and employees

BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) has been selected for the coveted ‘National Safety Innovation Award 2010’ for the steps taken by it for ensuring the safety of its consumers. With this award, BYPL is only among a handful of electricity utilities in the country, which have received this prestigious award in the past. Amidst stiff competition from 50 organizations including NTPC, ONGC, GAIL and Indian Oil, the Institute of Engineer’s ‘Safety and Quality Forum’ selected BYPL for this award. The award will be presented to BYPL in a glittering ceremony on 28 December 2010.

BYPL is being given the award for undertaking steps to significantly reduce electricity related dangers and making its distribution system safer in East and Central Delhi. Chief among them included implementation of Geographical Information System (GIS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Outage Management System (OMS) and Smart Grids. All these next gen technological interventions have helped to monitor on real time basis BYPL' distribution network in East & Central Delhi. GIS and SCADA have helped ensure distribution of safe, reliable and quality power to over 11 lakh customers.

Other noteworthy steps in this direction include automation of the Grid stations, which have not only reduced human interference. Complete network from 66/33 KV downwards to 11KV are constantly scanned and monitored for predictive failure. In case of an anomaly, alerts are sounded.

Enthusiastic about getting the award, BYPL CEO Mr Ramesh Narayanan said, “Our focus has been "Safety First' and we have together with our customers and team ensured all of us are aware of the safety measures to take in our organisation and at home when dealing with electricity. These measures have been undertaken keeping the consumer's safety in mind. A recognition for our safety measures from the Institute of Engineers body has come as a pleasant surprise. The faith placed on us will further motivate our BYPL team and spur us to work even harder for ensuring the safety of our consumers”,

“Since early this year, BYPL has also received the internationally acclaimed ISO 14001: 2004 (Environment Management System) and - OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety) certification from M/s Bureau Veritas." added Mr Narayanan.

According to a BYPL spokesperson, “To propagate the concept of safety among its customers and employees, BYPL has also started a campaign ‘Safety First’. We appeal to our consumers to keep an electricity tester at home, the same way they keep a thermometer at home. This will help reduce electricity related mishaps at home”.
