Businessman caught stealing 15 KW of electricity, sent to Jail by the Special Court

 

  • Businessman caught stealing electricity sent to jail for 14 days
  • Accused was caught stealing electricity by bypassing the meter and hooking from the nearby BSES LV mains – penalised Rs 3.53 lakh
  • So far BSES discoms have filed over 6500 cases in the Special Courts
  • So far the Courts have sentenced over 210 power thieves to jail – spending a total of 2400 man days in jail

 

In a significant judgment, the Special Court of Electricity, Patparganj has sentenced one Omvir, a businessman for stealing electricity to Jail, for a period of 14 days.  

 

Omvir was caught red-handed stealing 15 KW of power electricity at his commercial establishment-cum-residence (B–22 East Arjun Nagar, Jhilmil, East Delhi) by a BYPL Enforcement team on 22 September 2006. The electricity meter was found disconnected and Omvir was indulging in direct theft of electricity by hooking onto the nearby BSES LV Mains. The stolen electricity was being used for both Commercial and Domestic purposes.

 

According to the provisions and the guidelines in the Indian Electricity Act 2003, a penalty of Rs 3.53 lakh was imposed on the accused. When the accused failed to deposit the penalty amount till the stipulated date, a FIR was lodged at the local Police Station. The accused was then arrested and produced before the Special Court.

 

According to a BSES official, “So far BSES discoms have filed over 6500 case in the three Special Courts in their area and have sent over 210 power thieves to jail – spending a cumulative of over 2400 mandays in jail”
