It is now well known that the tentacles of power theft in Delhi are deep rooted. So deep that raids and penalties on power thieves have proved to be no deterrent. A Kusht Ashram, situated near Shahdara in East Delhi, is one such example where many run illegal factories on stolen electricity. In the last ten months, BSES has booked around 95 cases of power theft in over 60 raids conducted in the Kusht Ashram, unearthing power theft of 2781 KW, amounting to nearly Rs 11 crore in penalties.

The legal machinery including the Courts has started taking serious note of power theft. Recently, BSES’ efforts to curb power theft received a fillip when in two separate cases – but both relating to power theft in the Kusht Ashram - the Court of Additional Sessions Judge Mr Chandra Gupta remanded the two accused to Tihar Jail for 14 days.

Earlier the two accused - Radhey Shayam along with his son Ajay alias Bunty and Ramesh Chand – were caught by the BSES Enforcement Teams stealing around 33 W of electricity each, by hooking from the nearby BSES LV Mains. Subsequently FIR’s were lodged and the duo was taken into custody by the Police. Cumulative penalty of around Rs 26 lakh were levied against the duo. They were both stealing electricity to run factories inside the Ashram premises. While Radhey Shayam was running an electro-plating and ice cream cone making factory, Ramesh Chand was running an electro-plating and a plastic moulding factory.

It is pertinent to mention that many factories are running in the Kusht Ashram. From beautifully made Daris to Tin sheets –all are made within the Ashram premises. According to the people in the area, many of the goods and articles made here can be seen at posh showrooms in South Delhi and even exported.

BSES, Delhi’s premier power distribution company, is committed to ensuring quality and reliable electricity supply to all its consumers.
