Urges customers to show solidarity by voluntarily “Switching Off”
Earth Hour 2010 is once again a ‘call to action’ for every individual, business and community. It is a call to stand up, to show leadership and be responsible for our future. On Saturday, 27 March, between 8:30 pm and 9: 30 pm, this call is expected to be taken, this time, by over a billion people in over 6000 cities around the globe, including Delhi, will show their concern for the earth, switching off all electrical appliances and lighting fixtures.
Earth Hour is an annual international event created by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund), that urges households and businesses across the world to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour at the appointed time to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.
Lending their support and voice to the cause are celebrities and world leaders. Closure home, film star Abhishek Bachhan is championing the cause as its brand ambassador. So is the Delhi Chief Minister Smt Sheila Dikshit.
Delhi, along with Mumbai and Bengaluru, are the official Earth Hour 2010 city in India, among the 12 cities taking part at the global level. Like last year, when Delhi saved over 600 MW (272 MW in BSES area), this year too, BSES customers and Delhiites are once again gearing up to play a major role to make the event touch greater heights.
Showing solidarity with the cause, BSES is once again actively and whole heartedly promoting the Earth Hour initiative, as an official supporter for the initiative, together with The British High Commission, Ernst and Young, ITC-Welcome Group, Wipro, Nokia, Canon, Taj Hotels, Infosys and IBM, among others.
BSES once again appeals to its customers to unequivocally support the event and voluntarily switch off their non-essential electricity on the March 27 for an hour staring 8: 30 pm. To promote the initiative and to share concern over climate change amongst its customers and employees alike, both BRPL and BYPL have taken several steps. Prominent among them include (i) Earth Hour message in Synergy – the bi-lingual / bi-monthly newsletter going to 25 lakhs customers (ii) Screening WWF Earth Hour documentary during RWA meetings (iii) WWF Earth Hour posters displayed at offices and disseminated to RWA’s (iv)
Earth Hour message as a desk top background in over 4,000 employee computers and (v) SMS, Bulk Mail and Automated Voice Messages to over 6 lakh customers on March 27, 2010.
On their part, BRPL and BYPL will also switch off all non essential lights at their over 400 offices, spread across an area of around 950 sq kms, during the appointed hour (8:30 to 9:30 pm) on 27 March.
“Participation in this event is a token of commitment from each one of us to be an active member to reduce green house emissions and the impact of global warming in our own small way. We should all strive for the day, when we don’t need an Earth Hour”, says Mr Gopal Saxena, CEO, BRPL.
“BSES has been a silent crusader of climate conducive initiatives in its operations, as we realise that climate change and global warming are growing international concern which no responsible corporate entity can afford to overlook. As responsible citizens of this planet, it is extremely crucial for each one of us to ensure responsible action by adopting a sustainable way of life”, said Mr Ramesh Narayanan CEO, BYPL.
According to a BSES spokesperson, “For BSES energy conservation is a way of life. The company has been continuously championing the cause of energy conservation at multiple levels and across all available platforms. Besides educating the stakeholders on the needs and benefits of energy conservation, the company has also successfully undertaken several path breathing initiatives in this direction. Some of them include Free electric vehicle charge ports, Bijli Gyan Abhiyan with school children, making CFLs available at heavily discounted prices, safe disposal of CFLs among others”
