Delhiites will once-again join nearly a billion people in Mumbai, Los Angeles, London, Hong Kong, Sydney, Rome, Manila, Singapore, Dubai and over 6000 cities in over 130 countries across the globe to observe the Earth Hour on March 26, 2011. They will once again unite and switch off their electrical appliances and lighting fixtures for one hour starting 8: 30 pm (local time) to show their concern for the environment.
The message and appeal of the Earth Hour this year is to go beyond the hour, and commit to a more sustainable way of living, everyday and not just for an hour. It aims to move beyond symbolism. It calls for individual action - albeit small - to sustain commitments and responsible actions beyond the hour. With the people’s support, Earth Hour hopes to be a self- perpetuating drive that inspires individuals to correct the way they live, every single day.
Earth Hour is an annual international event created by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund), that urges households and businesses across the world to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour at the appointed time to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.
It is pertinent to note that Delhiites not only take the lead in per capita power consumption (1615 unit, which is double the national average), but also take the lead in saving electricity during the Earth Hour.
Like previous years, Delhi, is the partner city for Earth Hour 2011. Like last year, when Delhi saved over 300 MW (173 MW in BSES area), this year too, BSES customers and Delhiites are once again gearing up to play a major role to make the event touch greater heights.
Showing solidarity with the cause, BSES is once again actively and whole heartedly promoting the Earth Hour initiative, as an official supporter for the initiative, together with the likes of Reliance Power, HSBC, Infosys, ITC-Welcome Group, ICICI Bank, Canon, Taj Hotels, and HCL.
BSES once again appeals to its customers to unequivocally support the event by not only switching off their non-essential electricity on March 26 for an hour staring 8: 30 pm, but also commit to a personal action to benefit the environment and be part of the solution.
To promote the initiative and to share concern over climate change amongst its customers and employees alike, both BRPL and BYPL have taken several steps. Prominent among them include
(i) SMSes to over 10 lakh customers twice - on March 25 and 26, 2011, (ii) Earth Hour message in Synergy – the bi-lingual / bi-monthly newsletter going to over 27 lakhs customers (iii) Screening WWF Earth Hour documentary during RWA meetings (iv) WWF Earth Hour posters displayed at offices and disseminated to RWA’s (v) Earth Hour message as a desk top background in over 4,000 employee computers
On their part, BRPL and BYPL will also switch off all non essential lights at their offices, spread across an area of around 950 sq kms, during the appointed hour (8:30 to 9:30 pm) on 26 March.
“Earth Hour is all about the small changes that everyone is capable of making in their lives and building those habits into everyday living. It is not just about switching off lights for an hour, but going beyond it. Each one of us has the power to make a difference. We should all strive for the day, when we don’t need an Earth Hour”, said Mr Gopal Saxena, CEO, BRPL.
“Earth Hour symbolises a commitment to a more sustainable way of living, not just for an hour but everyday. As responsible citizens of this planet, it is extremely crucial for each one of us to ensure responsible action by adopting a sustainable way of life. Steps, albeit small, taken every-day will together add-up to make a big collective difference”, said Mr Ramesh Narayanan CEO, BYPL.
According to a BSES spokesperson, “BSES has been continuously championing the cause of energy conservation at multiple levels and across all available platforms. Besides educating the stakeholders on the needs and benefits of energy conservation, the company has also launched / taken several recent path breathing initiatives in this direction. Some of them include free electric charge ports for electric vehicles, Bijli Gyan Abhiyan, Making CFLs available at heavily discounted prices, Safe disposal of CFLs among others”
