  • Paperless Lok Adalat managed to save > 12,500  A4 size papers or nearly 2 full grown trees
  • Lok Adalat had 9 Courts  - having 2 judges each – functioned from 10 am till late evening

BSES Yamuna Power Limited’s (BYPL) Lok Adalat – in association with Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA) – for its customers in East and Central Delhi settled around 800 cases on-the-spot.  This ‘green’ paperless Lok Adalat organised on March 13, 2010 at the Karkardooma Court premises also managed to not only save over 12,500 A4 size papers or nearly 2 full grown trees, but also saved over 8,000 hours of judicial time.

“These are the approximate number of hours – spread over many months - which would otherwise have been devoted by the judiciary to resolve these 800 odd cases., said a BYPL official.

This unique Lok Adalat, unlike others, exclusively took up power theft cases already filed / pending before any of the Courts in Delhi, including the Special Court of Electricity, Karkardooma and Tees Hazari. Cases totalling Rs 4.17 crore were settled at this Lok Adalat.

According to Mr Ramesh Narayanan, CEO, BYPL, “To settle cases pending in different courts, a total of nine Courts were set up and each had two judges. They provided customers / litigants a unique opportunity for an amicable on-the-spot settlement of their power theft cases, relating to both Direct Theft (DT) and Dishonest Abstraction of Energy (DAE). ).  Cases upto Rs 5 lakh were taken up at the Lok Adalat”.

BYPL had appealed to its eligible customers desirous of settling their cases, to either appear in person or send an authorised representative on their behalf. For the purpose, the company had sent around 5,000 letter/notices to these consumers; distributed thousands of bi-lingual Hindi/Urdu leaflets in East and Central Delhi and aired radio spots on popular FM stations.

Such was the response at the Lok Adalat that all the nine Courts set up for the purpose functioned without any break from 10 in the morning till late in the evening. Moreover, Judges heard cases of each and every customer that came to the Lok Adalat. Thanking the DLSA Chairman Mr Justice Madan B Lokur and all the other judges, Mr Ramesh Narayanan said, “It is because of their efforts that the Lok Adalat had been such a success”

Since the aim of this Lok Adalat was to give relief to the ‘common man’, customers based on their financial condition, were allowed to pay the ‘settled’ amount in manageable installments.

BYPL had made special arrangements, like setting up 6 Help Desks – manned by specially trained officials -  to hand hold each consumer and to make their experience hassle free. One helpdesk was set up exclusively for the elderly and the handicapped and another for women.

Commenting about the huge success of the Lok Adalat, a BRPL spokesperson said, “The exercise was a win-win for everybody. For the customers, it meant an opportunity to amicably settle their cases and an escape from a prolonged and an expensive legal process. For an over worked judiciary, it meant some burden off their Courts. For BSES, it meant, more people coming into the billing net”.

BRPL and BYPL, Delhi’s premier power distribution companies are committed to ensuring quality and reliable electricity supply to all their consumers.
