BRPL bags ICWAI’s prestigious first prize for
Excellence in Cost Management
BSES is clearly emerging as one of the best
consumer friendly utility in the country. This is evident from the number of
awards the company bagged in the recent past from globally-celebrated
organization. BSES’s admirable work towards maximizing consumer delight by
deploying IT and IT-enabled services has been appreciated at many forums and
the trend continues.
Today, the Secretary, Ministry of Corporate
Affairs, Mr Anurag Goel conferred upon BRPL the prestigious and much sought
after 6th National Award for Excellence in Cost Management – 2008 at
Vigyan Bhawan. The glittering ceremony was attended by senior bureaucrats,
government officials and leading corporate leaders. BRPL was presented the
first prize in the category of “Private – Service Sector – Large”.
Instituted by the Institute of Cost and Works
Accounts of India (ICWAI), this prestigious recognition puts BRPL in the select
league of companies where maximum value is derived for the stakeholders in a
most transparent and cost-effective manner. BRPL won the award amidst stiff
competition. This year the awards had 7 different categories and more than 80
leading corporates were vying for the top honours. The award was received on
behalf of the company by Mr Amal Sinha, Chief Financial Officer-BSES, and Mr
Amarjeet Singh, Senior Manager Finance.
BRPL was chosen for the top honour by an
eminent Jury headed by Mr J S Verma, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court
of India. Its other members included
eminent personalities from the government, regulatory bodies, industry,
chambers of commerce, academia and management gurus.
“These
awards mean a lot. ICWA – a statutory body established by an Act of Parliament
– has very stringent parameters. They evaluate qualitative cost management
practices, adopted by the industry, for common good and operational
efficiencies for the betterment of all stakeholders – in our case the 25 lakh
consumers,” said Mr Lalit Jalan, BSES Chairman, while emphasizing that
“consumer delight would continue to guide us.”
Saying
that ICWA evaluation is based on achievements in important financial parameters
and effective utilisation of available resources and manpower productivity, a
BSES official added: “BRPL’s Reduction in AT&C losses (35.53% in FY 05-06
to 27.17% in 07-8), Reduction and control in cost and overheads (2.71% between
FY 07-08 and 06-07), Reduction in Breakdown and Load shedding (by 77% between
FY 02-03 to 07-08), Growth in energy billed (19.60%) , along with Huge
investment in Capex (around Rs 2000 crore between FY 02-03 to 07-08),
Distribution network and IT enablement among others achievements were highlighted
to the screening committee during the evaluation process.”
