Lalit Jalan takes over as CEO of BSES

Mr Lalit Jalan, 49, is the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BSES. He assumes charge today and would be responsible for the end-to-end transformation and turnaround of all businesses and functions of BSES.

Mr Jalan, also Executive Director of Reliance Energy Ltd, had spearheaded the transformation from erstwhile BSES to Reliance Energy Ltd in Mumbai. His able leadership, strategic visioning and planning played a major role in cushioning Reliance’s foray into the Energy Business, particularly in successfully turning around Reliance’s electricity distribution business in the country’s financial capital - Mumbai.

Though Mr Jalan’s experience was often availed for BSES’s Delhi operations, his hands-on leadership henceforth is certain to strengthen the company’s resolve to emerge as a world class utility. “I look forward to serving Delhi and meeting the aspirations of all our consumers,” Mr Jalan said in his first statement.

Academic Career

Mr. Lalit Jalan did his MBA in Finance from the prestigious Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and MS in Computer Science from Moore School, University of Pennsylvania, in May 1982. He did his BE from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in the year 1979.

On completion of his studies in 1982, he joined General Electric as a Strategic Planner. In 1984 he returned to his native country, India, to start his own business. 

In 1995, Mr Jalan joined Reliance Industries Limited as Chief Executive Officer, Polypropylene Business. Under his able guidance, Reliance successfully commissioned 1 million tons of PP capacity in a short span of 3 years, which makes it one of the five leading producers of the world and giving it a dominant 70% share of the domestic market.

He was subsequently made responsible for implementing e-business solutions across the Reliance group and appointed as the head, e-Business, Reliance Industries Ltd in 2000. He was involved in web enabling & networking all stakeholders (customers, investors, suppliers etc) and to synergize them with Reliance’s various initiatives.  He led the design of the entire suite of e-biz solutions including ERP, CRM, KM, Portals etc including rolling out of the change management initiative across the enterprise.

Awards

Mr Lalit Jalan is a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from IIT, Kanpur. He was also chosen as one of the 15 achievers from the IIT system.  These 15 achievers were showcased as IIT Spirit during the opening ceremony of 50^th Anniversary Celebration  (PAN IIT 50) organized at Silicon Valley, California in January’ 2003.
