2000 saplings planted during BSES’s week-long Vanmahotsav Week

Tree Plantation drive to reduce CO2 by  52,000 pounds/year, say experts

  • BSES’s Vanmahotsav week (18-24 July) strengthens Green Cause
  • Hundreds of employees – across 33 divisions – plant over 2000 saplings suited to Delhi’s climate
  • Each tree will remove around 26 pounds of CO2 per year
  • Since July 2002, BSES has planted over 10,000 trees at its various premises which helped reduce it’s AC bills by 15-20%
  • BSES appeals to its customers to make Delhi a Green City

Global warming is an international concern and as a responsible corporate entity, BSES has been contributing its bit to save environment by planting trees and by propagating energy conservation. While implementation its “Buy One, Get One CFL” scheme – which saw over 4 lakh CFLs being sold and reduction of CO2 emissions by around 1.44 lakh tonnes/year as well as reducing electricity consumption by 25 MW – BSES has also been observing a Vanmahotsav Week every year.

This year too a Vanmahotsav Week was observed and today in a simple ceremony at the Balaji SCADA Centre, BSES Chairman, Mr Lalit Jalan, led the organization by planting dozens of sapling along with other senior colleagues like Mr Ajay Dhagat, CEO BRPL, and Mr Arun Kanchan CEO BYPL.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Lalit Jalan Chairman BSES said “Trees act as Carbon Sinks, by removing carbon from CO2 and storing it as cellulose in the trunk while releasing oxygen into the air. According to some studies, trees can absorb carbon dioxide at the rate of 26 pounds per year – especially trees that are still growing” He added “This Vanmahotsav is BSES’ way of contributing and spreading awareness towards the Green cause”.

During the Vanmahotsav Week, hundreds of BSES employees planted over 2000 trees best suited to Delhi’s conditions and climate – including Neem, Jamun, Peepal, Champa, Kanair and Bamboo - across its 33 Divisions.  These will collectively remove around 52,000 pounds of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) per year.

At BSES, planting trees has been a continuous and an ongoing process. Since July 2002, BSES has planted over 10,000 trees as its various locations – spread across its licensed area.

BSES also appeals to its customers that as responsible stakeholders in Delhi’s progress and well being, they should also come forward and plant trees and do their bit to alleviate the Greenhouse Effect. Trees, besides reducing CO2, will also go a long way in conserving energy:

  • According to studies, a tree can be a natural air conditioner. The evaporation from a single large tree can produce the cooling effect of 10 room size air conditioners operating 20 hours a day.
  • Depending on factors including location, size, and condition, shade from trees can reduce utility bills for air conditioning in residential and commercial buildings by 15-50 percent. Trees, through their shade and transpiration, provide natural "low-tech" cooling that means less need to build additional dams, and power plants.

BSES, Delhi’s premier power distribution company, is committed to ensuring quality and reliable electricity supply to all its consumers.
