Renewable Energy: BRPL signs PPA to procure power from Delhi’s
largest ‘City waste to power initiative’ at Okhla
BSES’s support to the cause of “Green Delhi” became evident once more this morning when BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), in a simple ceremony at its Nehru Place HQs, signed a 25 year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Timarpur-Okhla Waste Management Company Private Limited (TOWMCL) to buy electricity from Delhi’s largest ‘city waste to power’ initiative, being set up at Okhla.
“Under the terms of the agreement, BRPL will procure 50% of the exportable electricity that will be generated by the under construction 16 MW ‘waste to energy’ integrated power plant in Okhla. BRPL will procure power at a DERC approved competitive tariff rate, determined by a competitive bidding process”, said Gopal Saxena, CEO, BRPL. The agreement allows the promoters to sell the balance 50% electricity through a suitable open access mechanism.
“The project, awarded to TOWMCL will process over 643,500 lakh metric tonnes or one third of Delhi’s Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) per year generated in Delhi. Of this around 1300 Tonnes Per Day (TPD) of MSW will be sourced from the Okhla landfill site and 650 TPD from Timarpur. The plant expected to be commissioned in late 2010-2011, is expected to annually lead to emission reductions of 266,066 metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent per annum”, added Mr Saxena.
The power plant at Okhla is the second such project in the National Capital that will utilise the city’s solid waste to generate clean and renewable electricity. The other project is coming up Ghazipur. In November, BYPL had signed a 25 year agreement to procure 49% of the electricity generated from the ‘city waste to power initiative’ at Ghazipur. Together the two projects will generate 26 MW of electricity by cumulatively processing around over 3000 tonnes of solid waste daily. These ‘City waste to power’ initiatives will also earn Carbon Credits for MCD and Promoters.
“These novel projects offer an integrated opportunity to not only manage the city’s colossal municipal solid waste in an environment friendly manner, but also provides clean, green and pollution free electricity”, said a BRPL official.
According to a company spokesperson, “Climate change and Global warming are growing international concern no body can afford to overlook. Our participation in this renewable power initiative once again shows that our commitment to the green cause is more than just symbolic. This is the second agreement entered by BRPL is about a week for procuring renewable energy. Last week, BRPL and BYPL had signed a 25-year agreement to procure 25 MW each of solar power from ACME Jaisalmer Solar Pvt Limited”.
BRPL and BYPL, Delhi’s premier power distribution companies are committed to ensuring quality and reliable electricity supply to all their consumers.
