With over 200 mass raids planned over the next two and a half months, BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) – distributing electricity in South and West Delhi - has launched one-of its biggest crack-downs on power-theft in recent times. For increased effectiveness of the drive and to unearth power-theft of various types, the raids are being carried-out 24 x 7 - even during late-night and early morning hours. A total of 125 areas are being targeted across South and West Delhi.
BSES teams often come under attack from the unscrupulous elements, while undertaking such mass-raids. To protect them, most of the raiding teams are being accompanied by Delhi Police personnel, who are extending full cooperation.
The intensity and effectiveness of the campaign can be gauged from the fact that in the first 7 days of the drive alone, over 5000 KWs or over 5 MW of power theft load has already been unearthed and nearly 750 cases booked. And these are the early days of the drive. The enforcement drive will continue till March 31, 2011.
To undertake these enforcement raids with microscopic accuracy, the discom is relying heavily on modern analytics and technology. For the purpose, energy input data from the over 6,000 Distribution Transformers (DT) is being collated and analysed by a centralized team and power-theft locations narrowed-down significantly.
“It is seen that with the unusually cold weather, there is a sharp and sudden increase in energy-theft. This at places leads to severe over-loading of the distribution system (transformers / feeders), resulting in trippings and is also a potential safety hazard. This dangerous over-loading of the distribution system can also damage the distribution equipment”, said a BRPL official.
“These 200+ mass raids will also assist check this menace. To ensure that the distribution equipment is not damaged and honest and genuine consumers are not inconvenienced as a result, the discom may not have a choice, but to resort to outages in these areas, whenever such dangerous levels of over-loading occurs – as is the practice world-wide”, added the official.
“Simultaneous to these raids, BRPL is also sprucing-up its service lines and undertaking associated work in these targeted areas. It is also facilitating new connections through BSES’ famed Door Step Service”, said a BSES official.
According to a BSES spokesperson, “Since July 2002, BRPL has booked over 1.01 lakh cases and unearthed a power theft load of over 6.27 lakh KW.
BRPL and BYPL, Delhi’s premier power distribution companies are committed to ensuring quality and reliable electricity supply to all their consumers.
