BSES officials appointed lead role in

Delhi Government's high powered Commonwealth Games’ “Emergency Response Team”

 

 

To ensure uninterrupted power supply and to tackle any power related emergency during the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the Delhi Government has constituted a high powered “Emergency Response Team” (ERT) for the purpose.

 

Two senior BSES officials and power sector veterans – Mr Subhash  C Sharma and Mr Mool Chand Sharma have been appointed by the Delhi government to this high powered team, which will work in close coordination with Delhi government’s Principal Secretary (Power). While Mr S C Sharma (BYPL) will head the Team as a “Coordinator”, Mr M C Sharma (BRPL) will assist him and provide alternate leadership as Associate Coordinator.

 

In his communication, Delhi’s Principal Secretary (Power) Mr Rajendra Kumar has directed all utilities (BRPL, BYPL, NDPL, DTL, IPGCL, PPGCL) to extend “all assistance when ever required” to this Emergency Response Team.

 

In case of a difference of opinion between the utility and the ERT, the Power Secretary’s letter further says, “In case your Company has a difference of opinion on any issue with Mr S C Sharma, first his request should be complied with and then the matter should be brought to my notice”

 

Besides coordinating with the power utilities to ensure there is no problem regarding suitable power supply in Delhi and in any of the Games venues / Commonwealth Games Village, the “Emergency Response Team” will also conduct mock drills in consultation with the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). This will ensure all the power companies are fully geared to take care of any eventuality. Further, this Emergency Response Team, will visit all the Commonwealth Games sites / venues and assess the power supply system in detail and submit its report to the Principal Secretary (Power), Delhi Government, every fortnight with suggestions for further improvement.

 

After being appointed as the Coordinator of the “Emergency Response Team”, Mr Subhash Sharma said, “The Delhi government has placed a lot of confidence in us. The biggest challenge infont of us will be to live upto this immense responsibility. We will not leave any stone unturned to ensure there is no electricity related incident during the Games”.

 

 

 

 

If inspite of taking all precautions, what if there is still an electricity related incident? Replying to this question, Mr Sharma said, “There should not be any power related incident as all backup power systems will be in place. If there is still a freak incident, our team with experience of several decades under its belt and several contingency plans, will be fully geared to tackle any unforeseen situation”.

 

Emergency Response Team’s Associate Coordinator Mr M C Sharma said, “It is matter of great pride that the Government has tasked me with this responsibility. I have only one aim - to work towards ensuring reliable and uninterrupted power supply during the Games. When asked, what will he do incase there is an outage, he said, “Without any delay, we will ensure that the power is restored in the earliest possible time, as all contingency measures are in place”.

 

According to Mr Ramesh Narayanan, CEO, BYPL, “The attention of the whole world will be on us during the Commonwealth Games. A power related incident can not only affect the Games, but it can also have an adverse impact on Delhi’s and India’s image. Taking no chances, we are fully committed and geared to ensure uninterrupted and incident free power supply during the Games. For this, we are busy sprucing and augmenting our distribution infrastructure”, “Not only have we arranged for more than adequate power during the Games, we will also deploy Quick Reaction Teams to take care of any unforeseen power eventuality”, he added.
