Enforcement team out to catch power thieves attacked, two arrested

 

 

BYPL’ Enforcement team, out to catch power thieves in East Delhi’s Ashok Nagar area was attacked by power thieves yesterday afternoon, grievously injuring the team leader and Assistant Manager Mr Varinder Singh. Following a complaint by the company and after an internal investigation, Delhi Police finally managed to apprehend the accused around 1: 30 am last night. The accused have been arrested under several sections including – Obstructing officials from discharging their duty and Orchestrating and attacking officials. Both of these are non bailable offences.

 

Following a specific tip off form area residents about large scale power theft taking place at Gali No 1, House No 665 in East Delhi’s Ashok Nagar, BYPL’ Enforcement team had gone to conduct a power theft raid at the premises. The moment the Enforcement team officials informed the owner of the premises that they planned to check the meter and other electrical equipment, all hell broke loose. Residents of the said premises, Pawan Verma and Roomal Sharma alias Pandit Ji, suddenly launched a vicious attack on the Enforcement team members, grievously injuring the team leader.

 

Subsequently, the matter was brought to the notice of senior Enforcement Officials and an injured Singh rushed to a local hospital. Based on the medical report, a FIR was registered against the accused around 1 am last night under IPC Sections 186, 353, 333, 324 and 34.

 

After attacking the Enforcement team members, the accused managed to flee the spot. After an intensive search of the area, the Police managed to apprehend the accused around 1: 30 am.

 

According to a BSES spokesperson, “This incident once again shows the precarious conditions under which our Enforcement officials operate. Such incidents have never diminished the spirit and resolve of our Enforcement team personnel, who share the company’s vision to see a city, free from the cudgels of power theft”.
