Special Court sends 3 factory
owners to Tihar for stealing electricity
In two separate cases of power theft, the Special
Court of Electricity, Patparganj has remanded three power thieves, including
owners of an ice cream factory, to Tihar Jail. One of the accused, owner of a
Jeans anodising factory had also attacked a BYPL Enforcement team during the
power theft raid. Cumulatively, they had been penalised Rs 1.6 crore by BYPL. Their
bail applications have also been rejected by the

Acting on a tip from one of its sources about a large
scale power theft, BYPL’ Enforcement team raided K 4, Gali No 1, Indira Gali,
Soon after the raiding party reached the premises, the
accused along with a few of his friends and henchmen surrounded BSES officials
and launched an attack on them, injuring them. Subsequently, only with the
arrival of the Police personnel, could the raid be completed. In the ensuring
mêlée, the main accused managed to flee.
Subsequently, according to the laid down guidelines of
the Indian Electricity Act 2003, a penalty of Rs 1.5 crore was levied on the
accused. When the accused failed to deposit the penalty in the stipulated time
frame, BYPL lodged two FIRS’ against the accused – one for power theft and
other for injuring its personnel while on duty.
On November 30, Delhi Police managed to arrest the
accused Nirbhai Sharma and presented him at the Special Court of Electricity,
Patparganj. The Court, rejecting his bail application, sentenced him to jail.
Ice Cream factory owner
behind bars, fined Rs 10 lakh
In another case, the Special Court of Electricity,
Patparganj, remanded two brothers (Harish alias Pappu and Surender alias
Bittoo) – owners of an ice cream factory in New Seelampur to Tihar Jail.
Earlier on September 30, 2009, a BYPL Enforcement Team, had raided the ice
cream factory situated at 107-108, H Block, New Seelampur and caught it
stealing 47 KW of electricity. Here too, the power was being stolen by way of
Direct Theft by hooking from the nearby BYPL LV Mains. The accused was levied a
penalty of Rs 9,50,000. Subsequently, when the accused failed to pay the fine
within the stipulated timeframe, a FIR was lodged again them.
After dodging the Police for quite some time, the
accused were finally arrested on December 9, 2009. They were presented to the
BSES, Delhi’s premier power distribution
company, is committed to ensuring quality and reliable electricity supply to
