  • Over 20,000 residents are currently paying over Rs 15 per unit to private contractors for diesel generated power

Sainik Farms, one of the poshest and also one of the last remaining un-electrified bastions in Delhi will soon start getting ‘legal’ and ‘affordable’ electricity. Infact, parts of Sainik Farms have already been electrified and have started getting electricity. After getting a green signal from the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC), BSES has started laying its network in Sainik Farms areas including Western Avenue, Anupam Gardens, Neb Valley, Forest Lane among others.

“This is a historic step in Sainik Farms’ over 40 year’s existence. This is the first time since Sainik Farm’s inception in 1967, that the residents will get ‘legal’, ‘affordable’ and ‘safe’ electricity. They will also get freedom from air and noise pollution – that comes with diesel generated power – as is the case now. Till now the residents of the area were at the mercy of private power contractors using diesel generators and charging exorbitant charges upwards of Rs 15 per unit of electricity. Now with electrification of the area, their power woes will soon come to an end.”, said Shri Arun Kanchan, CEO, BSES.

BSES has drawn up an ambitious Rs 22 crore plan to electrify Sainik Farms, spread over an area of over 400 acres and having a population of over 20,000. The area is being electrified using the state-of-the-art Low Voltage Distribution System (LVDS) technology, using fully insulated Aerial Bunched Cables (LTAB). These cables besides providing quality and stable power to residents will also make it extremely difficult to steal power by hooking from the nearby BSES LV Mains. Other advantages of this technology include steep reduction in local faults, much improved voltage at the consumers end and low maintenance. “To electrify the Sainik Farm areas, BSES is in the process of laying over 85 kms of insulated LTAB cable. This is equivalent to the combined length of Delhi’s Ring and Outer Ring Roads”, said a BSES official.

In addition to LVDS, electrification of the Sainik Farms area also includes installation of around 60 transformers. Of these, 7 transformers have already been installed in Anupam Gardens, Neb Valley and Western Avenue and have started providing legal and metered electricity to around 500 houses. Work to bring the remaining areas like Cariappa Marg, Defense Services Enclave, Neb Sarai Extension among others, under the purview of legal electricity is underway at a feverish pace and is expected to be completed over the next few months.

“BSES is working very closely with the local Resident Welfare Associations (RWA) to identify land where transformers and other equipment is being / will be erected. This is to ensure that the electrification of the area can be completed without any hitch and in a time bound manner”, added Shri Kanchan.

According to a BSES spokesperson, “Electrification of Sainik Farm areas, besides giving the over 20,000 residents of the area access to stable, legal and affordable electricity, will also substantially address the issue of power theft in the area. In the absence of legal electricity, many residents, in order to save the exorbitant rates for ‘contractor generated’ power, were resorting to power theft by hooking from the nearby BSES LV Mains. Till date, BSES enforcement teams have detected nearly 5000 KW and booked over 300 persons for power theft in the Sainik Farms area”.

BSES, Delhi’s premier power distribution company, is committed to ensuring quality and reliable electricity supply to all its consumers.
