Seven power thieves (in 5 separate cases), including an illegal electricity distributor sent to Tihar for 14 days

 

·        Seven persons, including an illegal distributor of electricity in five separate cases of power theft sent to Tihar Jail for 14 days by Special Electricity Court, Patparganj

·        Illegal Distributor of electricity was caught stealing and supplying over 2150 KW of electricity

 

On December 1, 2006, the Special Court of Electricity at Patparganj sentenced 7 accused of stealing electricity, including an illegal power distributor in five separate cases to Tihar for 14 days. The cumulative power stolen by the accused exceeds 2200 KW.

 

Illegal Distributor of electricity, stealing and supplying over 2150 KW of power sent to Tihar for 14 days

 

An illegal power distributor, stealing and supplying over 2150 KW of electricity to over 2000 dwellings in Basti Taliwalan, Anand Parbat was sentenced to Tihar Jail for 14 days by the Special Court of Electricity, Patparganj. Earlier, on July 10, 2006, Sunder Lal Gupta, the illegal contractor was caught stealing and illegally distributing electricity by hooking from the overhead BSES LV mains, with aid of aluminum conductors. Investigations into the case and admission by the accused revealed that he had laid an illegal distribution network to supply electricity in the area and was charging between Rs 50 and Rs 100 from each of the dwellings.

 

Subsequently, a power theft bill of over Rs 6.6 crore was levied on the accused, which he, failed to deposit within the specified time frame. Subsequently, a FIR (345/2006) was registered on 11 October 2006 at the Anand Parbat Police Station. “He was arrested and produced before the Special Court by the Police on December 1, and after hearing the arguments, the accused was sent to Tihar for 14 days” said a BSES official.

 

Garment and Anodising factory owner sent to Tihar Jail for stealing 19.70 KW of power for commercial purposes

 

Ram Babu alias Baboo, owner of a Garment factory and an anodising plant was sentenced by the Special of Court of Electricity, Patparganj to Tihar Jail for 14 days for stealing 19.70 KW of electricity for commercial purposes. Earlier, on 5 May 2006, Babloo’s premises at 5/67 Gali No 2, Usman Pur, Yamuna Vihar was raided by a BSES Enforcement team. He had by passed his meter and was caught indulging in Direct Theft of electricity.

 

A power theft bill of approximately Rs 7.83 lakh was raised on the accused. The accused was allowed to pay the penalty amount in installments. After paying the first installment of Rs 1.4 lakh, the accused defaulted on his later installments. Subsequently, a FIR (415/06) was lodged against the accused at the Usman Pur Police Station.  The accused was later arrested by the Police and produced before the Special Court.

 

Owners of a Commercial Unit in Karawal Nagar sent to Tihar Jail for stealing electricity

 

Surender Singh and Madan Singh, owners of a commercial unit in Karawal Nagar were sentenced to Tihar Jail for 14 days by the Special Court of Electricity, Patparganj for stealing over 14 KW of electricity. Earlier, in a BSES Enforcement raid at 257, Gali No 4, Munga Nagar, Karawal Nagar, the accused were caught stealing electricity from the nearby BSES LV mains. A penalty of over Rs 5.5 lakh was raised on the accused. 

 

When the accused failed to deposit the penalty amount, BYPL filed a FIR (847/2006) against the duo at the local police station. Later, the accused were arrested by the Police and produced in the Special Court.

 

Karwal Nagar based Garment Factory, indulging in power theft of over 15.5 KW sent to Tihar for 14 days

 

A Karawal Nagar based Garment Factory owner, Shakir Ali was sentenced to Tihar Jail for 14 days for stealing over 15.5 KW of electricity by the Special Court of Electricity, Patparganj. Earlier, a BSES Enforcement Team raid at F – 484 Gali No 17, Chand Bagh, Karawal Nagar found the factory owner stealing by hooking directly form the BSES LV Mains. Later a power theft bill of over Rs 6.8 lakh was raised against the accused.  When the accused did failed to pay the penalty amount, BSES filed a FIR (809/2006) at the Usman Pur Police Station. The accused was arrested and produced before the Special Court.

 

In yet another case, two power thieves Shafique and Rashid were sent to Tihar Jail for 14 days by the Special Court of Electricity, Patparganj. The duo were earlier caught stealing electricity.

 

According to a BSES spokesperson “These cases reinforce the fact the legal machinery has started taking a very serious view of power theft. BSES appeals to its customers not to indulge in power theft and assist in its efforts to crackdown on this menace.”
