successfully curbs power theft of 500 KW in a single day

·        1000 Illegal tappings removed

New Delhi, 07 December, 2005: To ensure quality and reliable power supply to its genuine paying consumers, BSES has come down heavily on consumers indulging in power theft and dishonest abstraction of energy across its distribution areas in Delhi. The BSES Enforcement team yesterday successfully removed nearly 1000 illegal tappings and hooking in Seelampur area in East Delhi.

The anti power theft drive operation successfully reduced illegal power theft of over 500 KW amounting to savings of nearly Rs 120 lakhs per annum. Over 300 Kg of wires were removed by the enforcement team; these wires were being used for illegally tapping on to the overhead power lines. 

“Theft has been a major reason for high AT&C losses and it has become essential for BSES to come down heavily on power thieves,” as per a BSES spokesperson. “Besides, theft results in over-loading of the system and frequent break downs which inconvenience the genuine paying consumers and is also instrumental in increasing tariffs. We request all our consumers to cooperate and help us in this enforcement drive to curb power theft,” he added.

“After having achieved reasonable success in our enforcement drives in the past, we are now focusing on curbing power theft on a sustained basis,” said Mr Arun Kanchan, CEO, BYPL. He further added that, “The offence of direct theft carries an imprisonment for a term of not less than six months but which many extend to five years or fine or both”
