The state-of-the-art technological deployments by Reliance Energy Ltd / BSES in the field of electricity distribution are getting international recognition. On August 6, 2008, Reliance Energy Limited / BSES received the coveted Environmental Systems Research Institute’s (ESRI) “Special Achievement in GIS” award in a glittering ceremony during ESRI’ 28th Annual user conference in San Diego, USA.

This special award was extended by ESRI, a premier body and high-tech software development and services company providing professional, market-leading Geographical Information System (GIS) software and geo database management applications.

This award is given to user sites around the world in recognition of their outstanding work in the GIS field.  Reliance Energy Limited / BSES was selected to receive this prize from over 100,000 user sites worldwide.

The award was presented to Reliance Energy Ltd / BSES for undertaking the GIS activities across India, including the GIS work undertaken at the BSES, Delhi end.

The hallmark of Reliance Energy Limited’ / BSES’ enterprise-wide GIS implementation is the integrated approach. Reliance’s IT department has successfully made their GIS a workspace for all field processes, from operations and maintenance to planning. The interface of GIS with other key systems helps utility managers and executives find new ways to optimize operations, increase work efficiency, and improve business processes.

GIS combines computer hardware, software, and data to create a tool for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographic information. Virtually any information can be linked to a geographic location, allowing users to see that information as part of a complete picture to be analyzed and applied to a problem or issue.

“The Electrical Utility business is characterized by a large physical spread of assets, work sites and offices. This spatial element plays a significant role in the work of our field staff. In order to model their physical workspace in to a digital workspace, the GIS solution was envisaged. An Enterprise wide Integrated GIS Solution was planned in order to maximize the benefits from various IT systems like SAP, IS-U CCS, SCADA, DMS, AMR &  CYME. Ultimate purpose is to help end users solve business problems & to achieve international levels of customer service”, said a BSES official.

Implementation of GIS has solved several critical problems at Reliance Energy Limited / BSES end:

  • The major problem was non availability of the entire network. The cable route drawings of existing decades old network were not available. The implementation exercise plotted the network in the system and thereby provided the spatial coordinates to every element of the network.
  • Through an intelligent combination of GIS & Fault Passage Indicator (FPI) identification of fault location was quicker & accurate. Integration with SCADA gave very valuable real time information to GIS users which other wise was impossible.
  • Planning for growth of the network was made easier by providing visibility of prospects on land-base with the network features in the proximity.
  • Visibility of topography assisted in handling emergency situations such as floods and water logging.
  • GIS helped O&M to give the visibility and pattern of Energy losses, making the remedial measures simpler.

BSES, Delhi’s premier power distribution company, is committed to ensuring quality and reliable electricity supply to all its consumers.
