BSES to gift CFLs to those who help check power theft

25,000 CFLs will be distributed during the first phase of this innovative reward scheme

  • BSES launches an innovative CFL gift scheme for informers who give power theft tip offs
  • Scheme will give a fillip to BSES’ power theft drive
  • Idea behind the scheme is to acknowledge the contributions of honest customers
  • Reward scheme will initially run as a pilot in BRPL and depending on its success will be replicated in BYPL
  • The scheme is expected to generate 10,000-12,000 power theft leads
  • The scheme comes on the heels of BSES’ successful Nukkad Natak initiative to tackle power theft

Controlling power theft is an important call of duty at BSES. Delhi, at around 35% loss levels, continues to be the power theft capital of India. Elimination of this stigma is the guiding principal behind BSES’ power theft control strategy.

Since July 2002, BYPL and BRPL have reduced AT & C losses by a record 24% and 22% respectively. This has been largely possible, by continuously deploying and adopting out-of-the-box and unconventional thinking. BSES has taken upon itself to bring down the AT & C loss levels, commensurate with global benchmarks.

In tandem with BSES’ stated policies on controlling power theft, BSES has launched a reward scheme that will not only give a fillip to its ongoing power theft drive by helping to increase the quantum of power theft tip offs from honest consumers, but also help in reducing the power demand and CO2 emissions.

Explaining the dynamics of the scheme, a BSES official said “An informer will be rewarded energy efficient CFLs for providing successful power theft leads. The idea behind the reward scheme is to acknowledge the contribution of honest consumers to fight the menace of power theft. To participate, all a customer has to do is leave a detailed and verifiable tip off  and their contact details at BRPL’s anti power theft number 39999777 or email at theft.brpl@bsesdelhi.com”, He added “As always, the information provided by the informers will be kept strictly confidential”

“On receiving a valid tip of, an enforcement raid will be carried out. If a power theft is detected at the address provided, the customer will be duly informed and the gift dispatched in a stipulated time frame. This innovative scheme will initially run as a pilot project in BRPL areas and depending on the response, will be rolled out in BYPL areas also” said a BSES official.

Expecting a good response to the scheme, BSES has procuring 25,000 CFL’s.  The reward, besides generating between 10,000- Rs 12,000 leads, will also conserve over 2.5 million units of electricity and reduce CO2 emissions by 9000 tonnes annually.

According to a BSES spokesperson, “This scheme comes close on the heels of BSES’ successful  Nukkad Natak initiative – where professional National School of Drama (NSD) actors were hired to educate its customers on the menace of power theft and energy conservation. In about 45 days, over 150 Nukkad Nataks were staged in the high power thefts areas”

BSES, Delhi’s premier power distribution company, is committed to ensuring quality and reliable electricity supply to all its consumers.
