Delhi CM dedicates BYPL’ Rs 40 crore 66/11 KV Grid

to the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010

In the vicinity of the picturesque Akshardham Temple, BSES Yamuna Power Limited’ (BYPL)’ Rs 40 crore, state-of-the-art 66/11 KV Commonwealth Games Village Grid substation was dedicated to the XIX Commonwealth Games in an impressive ceremony today by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi, Smt Sheila Dikshit. Living upto its commitment, BYPL completed the construction of the Grid sub station, its 49th, in its licensed area, in a record time of 13 months.

Others present on the occasion included, Dr A K Walia, Hon’ble Minister for Finance and Urban Development, Delhi Shri Sandeep Dikshit, Hon’ble Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), Shri Sharan Jeet Sharma, Councillor, Shri Rajendra Kumar, Power Secretary, GoNCTD, senior Government and BSES officials including, Shri Gopal Saxena, CEO, BRPL and Shri Ramesh Narayanan, CEO, BYPL.

Congratulating BYPL on the timely completion of the Commonwealth Games Grid, Smt Sheila Dikshit said, “Commonwealth Games 2010 will be by far the biggest sporting extravaganza ever witnessed in this part of the world. We have made a conscious effort to ensure that an event of this magnitude reflects the concerns of our times. These Games, therefore, are being showcased as ‘Green’ and every activity associated with it is a testimonial to this”

“With the use of fly ash bricks construction of the grid, water-harvesting and 30 percent of its area having green cover,  I am happy to note that this Grid is not only Delhi’s first green Grid, but also reflects the ‘green’ spirit of the Games”, added the Chief Minister.

Thanking the Chief Minister for inaugurating the Commonwealth Grid, BYPL Shri Ramesh Narayanan said, “Along with Delhi, which is gearing up to play its role as the host city, BRPL and BYPL are fully geared up to play their role as the host discoms”.

“This state-of-the-art Grid – costing around Rs 40 crore– will exclusively cater to the electricity requirements of the Commonwealth Games Village Complex. Like all others in BRPL’ and BYPL’ licensed area, this Grid too is Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) compatible and remotely operated from the Central Control Room at Balaji Estate, Kalkaji, thereby leading to faster resolution of breakdowns and complaints”, added Shri Ramesh Narayanan

To ensure uninterrupted power supply and to take care of any unforeseen eventuality, this 66/11 KV Grid substation conforms to the stringent international benchmarks, including N -1 criterion. As a result, it has two 25 MVA transformers - one primary and the other, its back up. Even if the primary transformer fails for some reason, the backup transformer will immediately take over and ensure continuance of uninterrupted power supply.

“Moreover for constructing of this Grid and energizing of the Commonwealth Games Village Complex, BSES has laid over 20 kms of cables”, said a BYPL official.

“BYPL’ concern for the environment is very visible in this Grid and in sync with the ‘green’ spirit of the Games. Having 30 percent of the area under green cover and the use of fly ash bricks in construction (32 mts x 13.6 mts) and water harvesting, it is also Delhi’s first Green Grid”, said a BYPL official.

Adding, “The water harvesting system has been designed with expertise from TERI and has a capacity to harvest 14,000 litres of rain water”.

“Watching this sporting spectacle will be over a billion fans and powering this spectacle will be BRPL and BYPL. To successfully meet the challenges of providing uninterrupted electricity during the Games, we have been working at a feverish pace, sprucing up and augmenting our distribution network”, remarked Shri Narayanan

“To ensure uninterrupted power supply in the run up to the Games, we have also made more than adequate arrangements of power from multiple sources”, added Shri Narayanan.

According to a BYPL spokesperson, “Post the Commonwealth Games, this grid will further boost and strengthen the power supply to Mayur Vihar, Shakarpur, Laxmi Nagar and adjoining areas”.

BRPL and BYPL, Delhi’s premier power distribution companies are committed to ensuring quality and reliable electricity supply to all their consumers.
