Meter tampering gang caught red-handed following a consumer-assisted sting operation, guilty sent to Tihar Jail

·        Two persons caught red-handed while taking bribe for tampering meter

·        Police arrests the duo and produces them before Magistrate

·        Magistrate sends the guilty to Tihar Jail for 14 days

BSES’ sustained campaign to educate its consumers about the menace of power theft and solicit their help to fight the menace has begun showing results. Customers are not only increasingly leaving anonymous tip offs on BRPL and BYPL enforcement numbers, but are also willingly assisting in sting operations to help catch the unscrupulous elements.

Recently a Nagloi customer (name withheld on request) assisted a BRPL’s sting operation to apprehend a meter tampering gang. The vigilant consumer informed BSES that he was approached by some BSES officials, who actually were imposters, who charged that his meter is tampered. Since it was a serious offence, they threatened him with a penalty of Rs 1.5/2 lakhs. Then they offered a ‘settlement’ for Rs 25,000 which included withdrawing the case and replacing his alleged tampered meter with a new electronic meter.

The consumer suspected something fishy and contacted the BSES office. Soon thereafter a team of BSES’s Vigilance and Enforcement departments, along with the consumer, planned a sting operation to catch the culprits. They struck a deal for Rs 15,000 with one Paras Nath Bhardwaj who came to collect the first installment of Rs 5,000. Bhardwaj was trapped by the waiting Vigilance Team with all incriminating evidence. The consumer also identified Jagdeep Singh – an outsourced engineer working for BSES – as the person who had earlier visited him, threatened him about the tampered meter and proposed a “settlement”.

The Police immediately arrested the two following a written complaint made under sections 415/416 / 420/424/441/383 / 34 of the Indian Penal Code and 138 (d), 140 and 150 of the Indian Electricity. A FIR is being subsequently lodged. The duo was presented before a Magistrate who remanded them to police custody and sent them to Tihar Jail for 14 days.

BSES urges its customers to stay alert against such unscrupulous elements – out to make a quick buck in a clandestine manner and tarnish the company’s image – and not to give them any money – what-so-ever be the reason. All Enforcement related payments (fines and penalties) are to be made only at designated BSES offices. Customers are further advised to ascertain and verify the identity of persons wanting to check the meter and should immediately alert the nearest BSES office or call 39999888 and 3999777, should they notice anything suspicious.

BSES, Delhi’s premier power distribution company, is committed to ensuring quality and reliable electricity supply to all its consumers.
