BSES Yamuna Power Ltd introduces ‘Renewable Energy Assisted Pump’ 1st REAP system
The path breaking ‘research and technology’ MoU signed between BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) – Delhi, in 2010, has started yielding ‘SMART’ results. The development of Renewable Energy Assisted Pump (REAP) System technology is the first of the ‘SMART’ products as a result of this collaboration.
REAP is a green power solution, capable of meeting water storage and pumping needs of users – in both rural and urban India. It is an easy to install submersible/surface pump connected to a water tank with a specially designed motor powered by a solar panel.
The first REAP system was dedicated at the All India Panchayat Parishad, Mayur Vihar – I, by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi, Smt Sheila Dikshit.
Others present on the occasion included Shri Subodh Kant Sahay (Hon’ble Union Minister of Tourism and President All India Panchayat Parishad), Shri Haroon Yusuf (Hon’ble Minister of Power, GoNCTD), Shri Sandeep Dikshit (Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha), Shri Amrish Singh Gautam (Dy Speaker, Delhi Assembly), Shri Parimal Rai (Power Secretary, GoNCTD) senior government and BSES functionaries.
REAP technology is being promoted by BYPL and IIT-Delhi to harvest ‘free and abundant’ solar energy in order to provide efficient water pumping and storage solutions, as also to reduce dependence on conventional coal generated electricity. REAP has a universal appeal. It will not only empower the farmers to tide over the perennial problem of a reliable power source for irrigation purposes, but will also find application in hospitals, parks, housing societies, schools, malls and other organisations.
For ensuring that its benefits reach the consumers, BYPL is in discussions with IREDA for extending subsidy and a loan for the REAP system to those that want to adopt this eco-friendly off grid solution.
REAP’s frugal maintenance and zero operating costs also make it an attractive commercial preposition. The initial investment can be recovered within a short span of 3 years. Its other benefits include:
